It was a very exciting moment for us to announce this month that Brandon is getting our own Comic Con!! River City Conventions, the same amazing folks that put on Central Canada Comic Con (among many others) in Winnipeg every year, are excited to announce that they are bringing the special experience of their conventions to Brandon! The process all started when the Brandon First team went to the 2017 Manitoba Comic Con as attendees. We met with the River City Conventions group, specifically CEO Michael Paille, and COO Kailyn Gregorash, with an expressed desire to bring a Comic Con to Brandon. After more than a year of liaising back and forth, building our relationships with the incredible RCC team, we were thrilled to invite them out to Brandon for a familiarization tour of our city, venues, hotels and key locations; this was then followed by a decision to move forward and host the event at the Keystone Centre. The online buzz has been incredible, and we are very much looking forward to all the cosplay, artistry and fandom enjoyment this event will bring to our city. Read more about Brandon Comic Con here
What We’ve Been Up To:
Brandon First was off around the country promoting Brandon as the best host destination early in March once again!
Our Executive Director, Graham, and Board Chair, Chris attended the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Sports Event Congress in Halifax. In ten 8-minute “speed dates”, they met with individual event organizers of national sporting events one-on-one and have some very exciting things lined up for future years.
While those two represented us in Halifax, Marketing and Comminucations Assistant, Jennifer, and departing board member, Jason took in the 2018 Tim Horton’s Brier in Regina. We handed out over 1500 information cards for tickets, cowbells galore to drum up excitement and talked to many people who were so excited about Brandon 2019 they already bought tickets right at our booth! It was an amazing experience and we even got to have our picture with the Tankard which lived at the booth all day. Tickets for the Brier in Brandon are on sale now at curling.ca/2019Brier and you can also sign up to volunteer right there.
On this Week in Brandon: The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair
For 111 years the Winter Fair has been a top notch agricultural exhibition, and is one of only TWO fairs in all of Canada to have received Royal patronage, (the other being the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto), as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II attended in 1970. Complete with livestock showing, horse jumping and heavy horse competitions, a trade show, petting zoos and entertainment for the kids and more, there is truly something for people of all ages! Check it out at the Keystone Centre, on until Saturday. Ticket pricing and schedules are available on the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba’s website at www.provincialexhibition.com
